Dr. Sikora and Oti

This is Dr. Nancy Sikora of Normanside Vetrinary Clinic. Dr. Sikora helped save Oti's life and helps us keeps our pets safe and healthy. Today Oti received a great report -- he's up to 4lbs, his temp is normal, his body condition is good and overall he's doing well. This guy really had us scared a few weeks ago, but now things look great! And did I mention that Oti plays like a nutball? He's really smart too.

What a Boy!

Calvin called in late November to let us know that there were kittens at the Wellington Garage. On Tuesday, December 2nd, Shelley went to rescue them. Calvin and Shelley were able to get this little guy. Shelley drove to meet Diane and handed off the kitten and $100 donated by a generous Wellington Cats donor. Diane took the kitten directly to Normanside (our great vets) where he received much needed medical attention. Diane asked vet tech Val for her middle name, which is Otiella -- her grandmothers name. And Diane named this little guy Oti. Dr. Lorree prepared Diane -- it didn't look good for Oti. The vet team cleaned him up, gave him fluids to help re-hydrate him, blood tests, fecal tests and sent him home with meds. The good news that day was that the combo test was negative! The not do good new was that we had a very sick kitten who would need round the clock care. From that time through now, with the help of Shelley covering two feedings a day and Kim and Jess helping with all the other cats and kittens, we were able to give Oti the care that finally brought us to today, Christmas Eve. Oti is much better, has learned how to play, and knows how to use the litter box. And the little man more than met us half way -- he purred from nearly day one, has been a good little eater, took his meds and let us give him fluids every day with out a fuss. Thank you Shelley, Calvin, Jessie, Kim, Drs. Sikora, Lorree, and Rafter, Alex (especially for the lesson in administering the fluids), Val, Michelle, Judy, and Sandy(especially for helping us arrange for appointments almost every day in December). Thanks to our friends and colleagues for listening and for good information and support. And thank you Oti for trying so hard and being so good.

Oti!

Oti Wellington was one sick little guy. But now he's feeling much better -- what a little fighter!. Shelley says he has the heart of a lion. We all agreed, if he's fighting we'd fight right along with him -- and he never stopped trying. No doubt this is the sickest kitten we've encountered at the house, and at times we braced for a bad outcome. Now we just care and feed Oti -- and play!

Matty is back!

Ever have a kitty get out? All of our guys are indoor cats -- that's not uncommon. What is different though is many (not most) people can pet and pick up their cats. We can neither pick up nor pet about five of the Wellington cats. I think they mostly like us -- or at least that we can open containers that they cannot and feed them. Matt is one that we can't touch. Truth be told, I don't think he likes us very much -- but he loves the other cats. Well Matt was out for three days in early August and on the evening of the forth day he followed his favorite treats into a have a heart trap and waited for us to bring him home. He's lean in general, but looked even thinner. And he seemed to be happy to see his kitty tribe, so I think he's glad to be home. We were, to say the least, relieved and thrilled. Stinky little Matty Wellington!

Been a long time...

Diane said recently that we should be writing this all down -- this meaning the continuing adventures of cat and kitten rescue. Then I remembered that we had a blog cooking a few years back and thought it might be a nice idea to reactivate it. Since my last post in the summer of 2006 many cats and kittens have come through our door. Some were fostered, adopted and now are in their forever home. Others are at home right here.

Almost everyone seems happy, they are safe, eat well, and there is plenty of silliness every day. There's also a lot of love, which is the thing that makes this nutty crazy amazing thing work. This is a photo of Tori and Gus Wellington -- tell me that's not love at its finest!
